10.26.22 Newsletter

Hey,

This email doesn't explicitly have anything to do with Dolly Parton but that's really the magic of Dolly...everything is about her without being about her.  Besides supplying you with Dolly Parton Autumn content or some hopefully helpful links that pique your curiosity, taking the time to write this thing feels good. The writing itself can be the mayor of GarbageTown, but the act of writing it is what really counts.

I had the honor of going to my grandpa's 90th birthday a few weeks ago. His two close friends from his senior living center came to our small celebration, both with handwritten speeches for my grandpa. One note came in the form of a literal stand-up routine, the other an extremely sweet poem. They both took the time, the care, and the energy to write something special. I had happy tears in my eyes as I listened and tore up the dumb card I got from Target before getting more charcuterie.

Anyways - maybe you write some "thing" to someone who least expects it this week. Don't wait until you're 90.

Fondly,
Rachel aka @heyfreesamples

  For Your Radar:

• I am way late here, but boy oh boy, do I have a soul connection to Ted Lasso. Here are some of the best quotes from the show.

• Oh, did you drop your energy mist?

• This nightclub uses "dancers' body heat to power the venue." I have no words. THIS IS SUSTAINABILITY FOLKS.

• As a Syracuse alum, I was witness to a lot of Canada Goose jackets. The Goose is now getting into footwear...

• Learning how you can "Google better" feels a little bit like learning how to tie your shoes better. Why wasn't I always doing it this way?

• Finally, a tattoo parlor that can give you tattoos that fade away after 9 months. You can time it so you don't have to have that dragon sleeve for your sister's wedding.

• L.L.Bean (arguably one of the most famous Beans) is dipping its toe in the vintage re-sell game. They dropped their first vintage collection on Instagram this month.

• As we all rediscover how to cook "cozy food," you'll need this tool that skips all the fluff and takes you directly to the recipe.

• Remember YikYak? It was an app that essentially digitized a rumor mill for college campuses. It's back(ish) and in the form of Jeti.

• I think that Canva is pretty much unstoppable in terms of designing assets on your own and now they're in the video editing game. Bow down.

Speaking of video, I am obsessed with Playphrase.me - type in any saying and it'll pull up relevant movie clips that you can turn into gifs. ⚡️

• Raining in LA? Do that wine tasting you undoubtedly had planned with your own sommelier at home.

WATCH THIS: Seriously, one of the best NYTimes videos I've seen in a long time around quitting and why it matters. The best nugget: "Don't be a martyr to grit."

A handy goal template in case you need one:
“I want to get _______ by helping _______ get _______ without doing _______.”
That formula ensures your goal includes three key elements:
1. A result you want.
2. A specific value you’ll provide to a specific group of people.
3. A thing you won’t do.

• And finally, I can't quit this TikTok.

The Other Two on HBO MAX
Listen, I typically reserve this section of the newsletter for some sort of brand/or resource but truly, I can't stop recommending this show. It's a story about the two not-famous older siblings of a young tween boy who has his Justin Bieber viral moment. Fame ensues, for both the tween boy and his mom, played by the hilarious Molly Shannon. This show has the energy of 30 Rock meets the sibling dynamic of Schitt's Creek. It made me laugh very, very, very hard throughout every episode. Please watch it and email me your favorite moment/line from the show.
